Picture Exchange Communication Systems

Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PEC’s)

The Picture Exchange Communication System (PEC’s) is a system of alternative/ augmentative communication, where the child uses symbols to request a desired item.

The system goes on to teach discrimination of symbols and then putting symbols together into sentences.  As well as requesting children are also taught to comment and answer direct questions.

There are six phases in PEC’S.   PEC’S is useful for students who do not initiate communication and has been successful for students of all ages.

Students may develop speech or move on to other AAC devices.
